After Turkey, we drove on eastward to cross the Caspian Sea from Baku to Turkmenbashi in Turkmenistan. Tickets for the ferry are not sold upfront, so you pretty much need to turn up at the harbor, hope to find a hidden ticket office and then see what they offer you. In our case, we drove over night from the border to Baku, as we were held up there for 10 hours and arrived at 7am. We were told that this day no boat would leave, so we settled in a nice hotel. After 3 hours a call woke us to inform us that now there was a ferry leaving at 10pm and we had to be at the harbor at 5.30pm. So we were…and we waited till 1am the next day to board the soviet vessle with no useable toilets and a less than friendly crew. 20 hours, and numerous oil platforms later we arrived in Turkmenistan, ready for the next border crossing adventure.
