COVID-19 in Belgium since the 20th of August 2020

In Belgium, on the 1st of September 2020, many virologists were thrown out of the Evaluation Cell ‘CELEVAL’, and were replaced by an ex-CEO of Bpost (Belgian mail company) Johnny Thijs, a health economist Lieven Annemans, and a spokesperson of the event-sector Vinciane Morel. The influence of these uninformed advisors, as well as the influence of professors Jean-Luc Gala, Bernard Rentier, Pierre-François Laterre and other professionals in open letters, together with scientifically illiterate politicians, has led Belgian governments to loosen corona-restrictions, leading to many deaths during a second wave.

On the 9th of September 2020, scientists hosted a conference at the Royal Flemish Academy of Sciences and Arts of Belgium in Brussels, entitled ‘Science serving society – Towards a sustainable management of the COVID-19 epidemic in Belgium’. The general public is yet waiting for any report of this conference. There is little transparency and little public servant liability. No politicans have been laid off so far. There has been little transparency on why the government chose the CEO of a mail company, event-lobbiers, and other populist uninformed advisors, instead of following scientific consensus as per the succesfull Public Health management of Taiwan, Vietnam, China, Thailand, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, and the likes.

Up until the last days before the new lockdown, Belgian politicians remained unaware of the correct way to handle this crisis, minimizing the gravity of the situation as it unfolded. Wake-up calls by Marc Wathelet and others were ignored by the governments.

Belgium’s main information website features a dead map on the homepage, no eye-catching visuals, has dead links and promotes uncertified home-made masks over professionally controlled certified masks. There is no information about aerosol build-up in unventilated spaces. In the Belgian Parliaments, and during COVID press conferences, politicians still take off their masks when they speak. There are no COVID infomercials on TV. The only infomercial is a EU-funded campaign to consume more milk.
