The tar sands in Canada have been branded ‘the world’s most destructive project’. Devastating an area of boreal forest the size of England, impacting on Indigenous peoples’ lives and health, if all the tar sands are extracted and turned into oil then the world has no chance of preventing runaway climate change.

And yet the Canadian government and oil multinationals have pulled out all the stops to ensure that Europe gets more and more deeply involved in the industry. Lobbying against EU climate policy that could result in a ban in all tar sands imports, pushing hard for a free trade agreement that could give more power to European oil giants and investors to profit from the industry, the last year has seen unprecedented bully-boy tactics in the EU to ensure that the tar sands are not curbed, but allowed to flourish, tipping us over the edge into climate disaster.

On the day the latest round of Canada-EU free trade negotiations (CETA) kicks off in Brussels, join the UK Tar Sands Network, the Indigenous Environmental Network, the Council of Canadians and Corporate Europe Observatory on a guided tour of the hot spots of tar sands lobbying in Brussels.
