KU Leuven studenten en onderzoekers: 'Als je neutraal blijft in situaties van onrechtvaardigheid, kies je kant van onderdrukker'

Wij, onderzoekers en studenten aan de KU Leuven, zijn diep verontrust door de passieve houding van onze instellingen tegenover de aanhoudende kolonisatie, apartheid en etnische zuivering die vandaag plaatsheeft in Palestina.

Bij het schrijven van deze tekst verklaarde de Palestijnse Minister van Gezondheid in Gaza dat reeds 230 mensen gedood zijn door willekeurige Israëlische bombardementen, waaronder 65 kinderen. Meer dan 1.700 mensen zijn verwond geraakt. Hele families zijn geraakt, en meer dan 72.000 mensen zijn van hun huizen verdreven.

Deze laatste Israëlische militaire operatie schrijft zich in een aanhoudend beleid vanwege Israël om Palestina etnisch uit te zuiveren van haar inheemse bevolking, en zo hiermee haar koloniaal project verder uit te breiden en een apartheid systeem te consolideren in het historische Palestina. Hierbij wordt ook de Palestijnse strijd voor bevrijding en zelfbeschikking systematisch onderdrukt. Wat vandaag plaatsvindt in Palestina is geen conflict, en ook niet het gevolg van een ‘vicieuze cirkel’. Het is een vorm van etnische zuivering die geproduceerd is door een koloniale apartheidsstaat. We moeten daarom afstand nemen van het “twee kanten” narratief dat de kolonisator en de gekoloniseerde met elkaar wil gelijkstellen, en dat de asymmetrische machtsrelaties negeert.

Tijdens de voorbije weken hebben we de gewelddadige repressie van Palestijnse betogers doorheen heel historisch Palestina kunnen zien: in Sheikh Jarrah, Jerusalem, in Haifa, Lydd, Jaffa, Hebron en Ramallah. We hebben gezien hoe Palestijnen werden gelyncht door Israëlische kolonisten die door de Israëlische politie werden beschermd. We stellen een aanhoudende Nakba vast, een systematische verdrijving en etnische zuivering van de Palestijnen van hun land ten gevolge van Israël’s apartheid regime. We zijn geschokt door de stilte van onze instellingen.

We verwachten dat de Belgische en Europese universiteiten en politieke instellingen de Palestijnen in hun strijd voor bevrijding en strijd tegen onderdrukking sterk ondersteunen. De tijd is aangebroken om een “neutrale” houding te verlaten. Neutraliteit en onpartijdigheid zijn vooral een steun voor Israël’s koloniaal beleid en onderdrukking van het Palestijnse volk. Bovendien staat zo’n houding haaks op de waarden van diversiteit en inclusie en de bescherming van de mensenrechten die ons land hoog in de vaandel draagt.

We vragen een aanhoudende actie, want stilte betekent in deze medeplichtigheid met een koloniaal en apartheidsbeleid dat in stand wordt gehouden door Israël, en waarvan de Palestijnen het slachtoffer zijn. Het onderhandelde “staakt-het-vuren” zal geen einde brengen aan de bezetting, die nu al meer dan drieënzeventig jaar duurt. De Israëlische bezetting, segregatie en apartheidspolitiek zal verdergaan, en de Palestijnen zullen het slachtoffer blijven van onteigening, discriminatie, verwondingen en dood.

Van de Belgische en Europese gezagvoerders vragen we:

1. De officiële erkenning van Palestina 2. Sancties tegen Israël voor het schenden van mensenrechten en een terugbetaling van de vernietigde infrastructuur die door de EU gefinancierd wordt 3. Een onmiddellijke stopzetting van elke vorm van wapenhandel tussen de EU en Israël 4. De boycot van en terugtrekking uit samenwerkingen met Israëlische instellingen en bedrijven die medeplichtig zijn met en winst halen uit het apartheidsregime 5. De ondersteuning van het onderzoek door het Internationaal Strafhof naar oorlogsmisdaden door Israël in Palestina 6. Een onmiddellijke stopzetting van de blokkade op Gaza die door Israël en Egypte sinds 2006 in stand wordt gehouden

Van de Belgische en Europese academische instituten vragen we:

1. De boycot en terugtrekking van samenwerkingen met Israëlische instellingen en bedrijven die medeplichtig zijn met, en baat hebben bij, de apartheidsregime 2. De stopzetting van samenwerkingen met Israëlische universiteiten in het kader van het Horizon 2020 of Erasmus programma die een bedreiging vormen voor mensenrechten 3. De systematische toepassing van mensenrechten in onderzoek, onderwijs en beleid
