Artists against Thatcherism

Muziek

Sinéad O’Connor – Black Boys On Mopeds

“Margareth Thatcher on TV
Shocked by the deaths that took place in Beijing
It seems strange that she should be offended
The same orders are given by her
England’s not the mythical land of Madame George and roses
It’s the home of police who kill black boys on mopeds”

Morrissey – Margaret on the Guillotine

“The kind people Have a wonderful dream Margaret On The Guillotine Cause people like you Make me feel so tired When will you die?”

Elton John – Merry Christmas Maggie Thatcher

“So merry Christmas Maggie Thatcher
May God’s love be with you
We all sing together in one breath
Merry Christmas Maggie Thatcher
We all celebrate today’
Cause it’s one day closer to your death
They’ve come to raid your stockings
And to steal your Christmas pud
But don’t be too downhearted
It’s all for your own good
The economic infrastructure
Must be swept away
To make way for call centres
And lower rates of pay”

Renaud – Miss Maggie

“Je veux dédier ces quelques vers
Issus de mon dégoût des hommes
Et de leur morale guerrière
Car aucune femme sur la planète
N’ s’ra jamais plus con que son frère
Ni plus fière, ni plus malhonnête
A part peut-être Madame Thatcher”

Billy Bragg – Thatcherites

“You thatcherites by name,
lend an ear, lend an ear
You thatcherites by name
lend an ear
You thatcherites by name,
your faults i will proclaim,
Your doctrines i must blame,
you will hear, you will hear
Your doctrines i must blame, you will hear
You privatise away what is ours, what is ours
You privatise away what is ours
You privatise away and then you make us pay”

Elvis Costello – Tramp the Dirt Down

“When England was the whore of the world
Margaret was her madam
And the future looked as bright and as clear as
The black tarmacadam
Well I hope that she sleeps well at night, isn’t
Haunted by every tiny detail’
Cos when she held that lovely face in her hands
All she thought of was betrayal”

John McCullagh – I’ll Dance On Your Grave Mrs Thatcher

“and we’ll dance yes we’ll dance
yes we’ll dance on your grave mrs thatcher
she had come well prepared with the coal
that she’d amassed everyday she’d try to break us down
take the flag down from the mast
but we stood there all united
exept the scabs down from the south
with there crys for a ballott
taking food from our kids mouths”

Test Dept & the South Wales Striking Miners Choir – Comrades in arms

Robert Wyatt  – Shipbuilding

“Is it worth it?
A new winter coat
And shoes for the wife
And a bicycle
On the boy’s birthday
It’s just a rumor
That was spread around town
By the women and children
Soon we’ll be shipbuilding”
