Ondernemer Nick Hanauer die onder meer fortuin maakte door al heel vroeg te investeren in Amazon.com haalt in zijn TED Talk het idee onderuit dat ondernemers ‘werkgevers’ zijn.
“When businesspeople take credit for creating jobs, it’s a little like squirrels taking credit for creating evolution. In fact, it’s the other way around”, aldus Hanauer (volledige transcriptie hier).
Rijke mensen moeten dus niet beloond worden met belastingsverminderingen, maar juist zwaarder belast worden. “When you have a tax system in which most of the exemptions and the lowest rates benefit the richest, all in the name of job creation, all that happens is that the rich get richer.”
En die rijken worden rijker maar stimuleren daardoor de economie niet meer. “The annual earnings of people like me are hundreds, if not thousands, of times greater than those of the median American, but we don’t buy hundreds or thousands of times more stuff. My family owns three cars, not 3,000. I can’t buy enough of anything to make up for the fact that millions of unemployed and underemployed Americans can’t buy any new clothes or cars or enjoy any meals out. Or to make up for the decreasing consumption of the vast majority of American families that are barely squeaking by, buried by spiraling costs and trapped by stagnant or declining wages.”
Hanauer vindt dan ook dat er een verschuiving moet komen van belastingen op arbeid naar belastingen op kapitaal zoals zijn eigen fortuin. “The extraordinary differential between a 15 percent tax rate on capital gains, dividends, and carried interest for capitalists, and the 35 percent top marginal rate on work for ordinary Americans is a privilege that is hard to justify without just a touch of deification.”
De excentrieke ondernemer sluit zijn speech af met deze wijsheid: “Taxing the rich to make investments that grow the middle class, is the single smartest thing we can do for the middle class, the poor and the rich.”
Toen Hanauer aan de directeur van TED vroeg waarom zijn video niet op de website van TED verscheen, kreeg hij dit antwoord van Anderson: “Even if the talk was rated a home run, we couldn’t release it, because it would be unquestionably regarded as out and out political. We’re in the middle of an election year in the US. Your argument comes down firmly on the side of one party. And you even reference that at the start of the talk. TED is nonpartisan and is fighting a constant battle with TEDx organizers to respect that principle…”
Maar toen stak er een stormpje op op sociale media en weblogs als The Huffington Post. Zelfs The Washington Post besteedde er aandacht aan en schreef: “TED won’t be spreading it. Because as we know, the history of ideas worth spreading is that they never offend society’s entrenched interests”, aldus columnist Ezra Klein.
En kijk, 24 uur van digitale bliksem en donder later trekt TED de staart in. De video werd toch gepubliceerd samen met een lange uitleg waarom die hele hetze een ‘non story’ is want er zijn zoveel TED Talks die nooit de website halen. De organisatie noemt het ook onzin dat de video het niet gehaald zou hebben omdat hij ingaat tegen de belangen van sponsors als American Express, Siemens en Pfizer.
