Addressing all students at Ghent University

It is with great honour that we, students of University College London, accept this award on behalf of every struggling student body across Britain, calling for an end to fee rises and cuts to education. But we are part of a bigger movement that rejects our capitalist system which condones these cuts, indeed finds them necessary.

The situation is urgent. Governments across the world are imposing cuts to services that will violate the rights of the poorest and most vulnerable members of our society. Preferring to pander to the needs of big business, we are seeing social goods shelved onto markets. This is what is happening to education. In Britain, fees are being raised to over 10,000 euro per year: learning is now a privilege and no longer accessible. Higher education will become a commodity, as if knowledge and learning were something that one could trade in, could make money out of. This is a growing trend, and one that endangers our very rights as citizens. Global commons, down to the very air we breathe, is being privatized, driven not by individual politicians or party politics but by a neoliberal capitalist system in crisis.

Students around the world have been occupying their universities to show that what goes on behind closed doors does not go unnoticed. No longer can we stand by and watch: to do so is to condone the system! These open spaces, right at the heart of academic institutions, have been created to share and organize, to defy the government’s policy of making society pay for a crisis it did not cause, and to bring students, teachers, activists, workers, citizens together to give hope that there is an alternative. The cuts harm us all and therefore the fight to defeat them must involve us all.

Together we have a chance of victory. Today the students of London, Ghent and every other city and region around the world join together in solidarity and say no to punitive austerity measures, no to unjust cuts, no to their system that legitimizes this madness. But we say YES also. We say YES to education, a social good, that is accessible to all. We say yes to a real democracy, where everyone participates in the big decisions. We say YES to a more just and sustainable world, as we recognize that it is the same system that is cutting benefits that is creating the climate crisis we are facing today. We have a vision of a better world, and are struggling towards it.

We will continue to mobilize, resist, occupy and transform to create a world that is worth living for, for everyone.
